New year, new you! Now that 2017 has rolled in, you must be thrilled to start your new tech job. The thing is, how do you make the most of this experience? First off, how can you make sure that this won’t be another job you’ll eventually hate? All you need is a change of perspective, and a few tips to help you embrace this new opportunity!
 

 

Find your re-charging station

Where do you find the coffee or quietly read a book? Find a place where you can grab a snack or just get a simple breather. Whether it’s Monday blues or one of those slow days, you need to find a station where you can go into zen mode so your productivity rate doesn’t falter. This is especially applicable for people who have jobs in IT and software.  


Define your motivations.

Set your priorities. Why are you working hard? Why do you need to do your best in this job? Is this job a once in a lifetime opportunity you can’t waste? When you know why you should perform well, you won’t lose track of your goals. Keep these thoughts in mind to stay positive through your work days.

 

Fail to plan, you plan to fail.

Don’t underestimate the power of written to-do lists. The secret to accomplishing a LOT during your office hours is to set small, doable tasks every day. The more you check off your list, the more accomplished and motivated you will feel. Make use of your smartphone and use the right apps, your calendar, and alarms to help you stay in tune with your now busy schedule.

 

Be adaptable.

In terms of dealing with other people, be chill. Keep an open mind, especially when you’re accepting constructive criticism. It’s a new working environment, and you might need a few days or weeks to adjust. Avoid being a negative mind reader (someone who always assumes the worst) and embrace a positive work ethic in the workplace.


Take on new tasks.

In the workplace, don’t hesitate to do anything beyond your job description (as long as it’s not illegal, that is). Some people fail to realize that taking on additional responsibilities builds and hones their skillset. It’s also an excellent way to meet new people and learn new things.  


Speak out!

Don’t be afraid to use your voice and give your input when it’s needed--as long as you do it respectfully. Be an active participant during meetings. When you are vocal and pro-active, you are somewhat telling your peers (and your boss) that you’re a big asset to the company.
